Toronto considers apartment licensing to crack down on bad landlords

Quote from the following article-

Daryl Chong of the Greater Toronto Apartment Association called the proposal “just another tax grab.” He said it would stigmatize tenants if Rent Safe adopted the prominently displayed colour-coded signs used by Dine Safe and were living in a building with a red “fail” card in the lobby.

In response to Mr. Chong's remarks I would think he would be more concern about the landlord and their building having a red fail card in the lobby. If anything this would inform potential tenants of the type of landlord they would be leasing from- a landlord who receives the agreed upon rent and runs doing nothing for the tenant or upkeep of his/her building. It is time to hold these landlords accountable to tenants just like any other business who offer a product or service to a customer. Customer agrees to the price you fulfill your obligation or else there will be consequences. Why is this concept so hard for a landlord to understand? Furthermore Mr. Chong and the association he represents should be educating the landlords on what is the right and wrong way in managing a building and to remember who is paying their mortgage. You and your organization can start by working with tenants and educate these bad landlords on how to treat tenants with respect and maintain proper maintenance standards of their buildings.
